2010-05-01 [Hendercrazy]: If we artists, that still remain here in Elftown, would like to see this place stop the artistic loss and growing member inactivity, ever recover and perhaps one day even make a return to the former glory days artistic activity or beyond... I strongly believe and think it's important that we first step up ourselves, seriously organize and preserve what we currently have going and enjoy. Let's all unite to build a solid foundation. One place that we can go... to easily connect us all and our artistic wikis, improve our communications, inspire and motivate each other. A one-stop place where it's easy to catch updates for everyone that's here for the art. I've started this new wiki to hopefully be that place. If you're an active artist here and have your own art wikis... please post them up!!! If we can build this into a nice database... it can be a great place to discover other fellow artists as well as be found ourselves. This way, we don't spend countless hours and hours scouring through thousands of Elftown houses just to find a few creative folks. Also, if you sign-up... be sure to spread the word! Post the wiki header in your houses as well! This way, perhaps any future artists that make their way to Elftown can more easily discover how we share and bond with each other through our art and make it a fun community without getting immediately discouraged by looking at deserted houses and inactivity!

Once we build this strong foundation... the next step will be to start up some new building blocks for new growth. :)

2010-05-04 [Hendercrazy]: Question for you all! Out of total curiosity (I haven't done any research yet)... does anyone here have Adobe Photoshop CS5? I'm using CS2 right now and was wondering if there's been any major changes or great new features with the newer versions. Thanks for any input! :)

2010-05-05 [Aeolynn]: I use CS2, because that is the best program of the 4 so far (in the opinions of myself and several big time artists who work for Lucasarts/Bioware/Blizzard) however, I have not seen what 5 has brought to the table.

I do like that now you can upload the work directly onto the elfwood site where previously, you had to log in to a different page. There are still some issues with the site, though in terms of browsing. I want to get back to keeping up-to-date with art on there. Elfwood was the first site I ever joined, after all.

2010-05-12 [Serwa]: Ahh okay, well, I think I use the site too little to judge that, but I think I dont use the site so much because it doesnt feel inviting.. too cluttered.
I only started to use elfwood again last year, after not visiting atleast 3 years or so, so cant really compare :)

It's pretty strict on the fantasy theme, it feels a bit too moderated. the queues to get the drawings published are pretty long, and well, it doesnt really capture me. But I do apreciate the site. I dont think I would recommend it to artist friends though.

2010-05-13 [Kyrinn]: Are they still doing the old ticket system? Gah, no wonder Ive not bothered wtih that site any more. Got an alert saying they had finally published my last submission a few months back, like 1 year AFTER I did it. >.< There are so many other art based sites that allow you to have your art up in seconds, not days, weeks, or months. And as far as I know, have 'mods' like EW, so why cant they follow that example? They would probably get better reception for it.

It takes an average of 5 days before a work get published.
I've uploaded a drawing so once every while in the past months.

There indeed is a section for non-fantasy art, that is quite an improvement, as you say to open it up some more.

I agree with Kyrinn, sites like deviantart and gfxartist will have your drawings published within a matter of seconds.
From an artist point of view, you want your work to be on the web, receive comments on it - get feedback. You dont want to wait almost a week, or longer! to finally have your work published.
We are on the internet, everything goes fast nowadays, people are spoiled, and then there is one website that is stubborn, and is trying to take all you know of the internet away and take you 8 years back into time internet-wise.

The way it goes now is that people who actively use elftown get +points for succesfully added works. And because of those +points they will get a higher priority position in the queue to get your works published.
Very nice if you are that active artist on elfwood.
But if you are new, or an irregular visitor, it's pretty damn annoyign to have to wait extra long.
It's annoying to wait in the first place already, since they can also moderate it after publishing.
But they just hve to be North Korean about it all.

2010-05-13 [Kyrinn]: I have visited the site since the change over but not submitted anything. Ill admit it looks better but I have a funny feeling the submitting is still a pain in the butt. Art sites have mods to monitor submissions and 'police' them according to the site rules, so I really think making an artist go through a mod before submitting anything is counter productive.  But then, thats just me. :P

2010-05-14 [Hendercrazy]: The reason why I was asking all of you about Elfwood is because I'm also going to be updating there again soon. Like many of the current features and overall feel/vibe there again. In fact, I'm planning on mentioning Elftown in the image description of every new image I post there. Perhaps over time... it'll bring a few fellow Elfwood artists and fans here. :)

2010-05-15 [*Phoenix*]: The whole point of Elfwood is for FANTASY artists, not just anything you want to draw you can put up. Therefore they have the mods there in place because of that fact. They don't want a picture of, let's say, a lion; they want a fantasy winged lion. They aren't meant to be like Deviantart and other places where you can post ALL of your work.

If you don't like that, the don't publish at Elfwood. Simple as that.

They can also have a little trust in people, and let them upload and publish right away.
And mod it afterwards. This way it will feel like theres a little more freedom, and will make it more attractive for more fantasy artists to post works there.
Because right now people are staying away because the queues suck. It's as simple really.
Visitors could even tag nonfantasy items for fast removal. But since there's also the 'other works tab' there should be no big issues.

So wether it is for Fantasy Only or not is not the case, the queues are just not really necesary, and give a very north korean feeling to what should be an openminded artist community.

The problem is not with the fact that I want to draw lions,
no need to explain to me what Elfwood is.
The queues suck, and are not necesary is all I been saying.
Elfwood is fantasy themed and should stay fantasy themed.
You make it sounds like I want it to be a 2nd Deviant art.
Deviantart was only mentioned to show that it is possible to run an art site without queues.

2010-05-15 [wicked fae mage]: For me, Elftown lets me upload sketches weather they're realistic or fantasy with no judgment if I don't ask for it and there's no need to publish or queue anything. Though, I'm also not a big time painter or photo manipulator...mostly writing here.

Though I'm not a fan of Deviantart and other sites like that because of the ridiculous amount of effort needed to become a member. I sat there for three hours one night trying to be a Deviantart member, but it kept erroring me, telling me my email was wrong no matter how many times I typed it or a million other problems.

So if somebody's hoping to traffic more visitors either way, or members either way, those are a few problems I've run into and what generally keep me from a website as pointers.

Yes, the quesues suck, but that's their way of doing it. They don't want to be just another online gallery:

It is tightly controlled to stay within the SciFi/Fantasy theme, as art or stories depicting other motifs are not accepted. We host a wide range of original artwork to behold and inspire, and exciting tales to tantalize the imagination.

They WANT to keep it controlled. Like I said if you don't like it, just leave...

When you become a member you must agree to their terms and conditions (http://www.elfwood.com/erb/tosnice.html) and it says specifically:
Membership is available to both visitors and artists and writers who create material that is suitable within the Elfwood guidelines

It may seem like I'm being "heated," but I'm not. I like Elfwood because it was the first place I ever published my art and I have a great fondness for it. I don't like to see people bashing it. If you don't like it, there's no need for you to be there....

2010-05-16 [Hendercrazy]: The thing I particularly like about the current Elfwood is that it's much more user friendly and easy to navigate/find stuff than any other fantasy art site I've been to. Even more cool is that fans can create a profile of their own, have the ability to favorite artists, writers and even specific works. I think it'll be enjoyable to getting back to some regularity there again. :)

2010-05-16 [Adaman]: Is there a better way to organize these wikis? My elftown name would place me at the beginning of the list with Art of Adaman. I don't like the feeling of bypassing all these pages and placing mine at top, only because of alphabetic coincidence.

Just the fact that we have this wiki to find and follow art wikis and updates here on ET easier is really the main point. :D Your username just happens to start with an A. :P Originally, I was going to separate everything by various categories and only go by alphabetical wiki name... but ultimately decided that going with the username would be the most fair. ;)

Of course it's possible to alternate the order, for example always moving a list of one letter to the bottom from the top, but does anyone want to do that regularly?

Only one person has changed their username since putting up their wiki... so it really hasn't been an issue. However, you now have a place to go if you're one of those people. :D

Elfwood is what it is, but when asked what I find of it, then there's room for improvement is all I'm saying.
Nowhere have I been bashing on your precious elfwood. So no need to protect it. It's perfectly safe. ;) lol

That's what I truly enjoy most. :) Be artistically active again, do my part to try to help make both places fun and motivating and interact while I continue to grow as an artist. That's really been the roots reason of why I ever got online in the first place. Granted, this time around I'll also be focusing a bit on selling some prints... but that'll be mostly to help pay for art supplies and donate a bit back into these communities.

I've probably been there longer then most people. Hell, I was in the original first thirty galleries before they did the first overhaul. Now in gallery 66 out of over nine hundred. Hell, got my nickname there because of my art style. There have been changes, good and bad. No biggie. I was more turned off by the attitude of the people. I kept getting attacked over and over because of my artwork. Left the place alone because you get tired of listening to morons complain day in and out. If the collective attitude has improved, I may participate more actively.

I had someone gift me as-long-as-a-report comment about the difference between a dragon and Quetzalcoatl. I had commented on their picture something about it being a cool looking dragon, but there wasn't even a description or anything. I hated how she yelled at me; boy was she mad... >.<

Besides, there's always the delete option for their comments if push comes to shove. ;) And... if they get continue to harass... you could always report them to the ERB. Bad people can get temporarily banned. If they still come back after that and persist... they could end up permanently banned.

2010-06-10 [wicked fae mage]: During the project I listen to a lot of music and watch a lot of crime shows. I don't know the reason for that. The inspiration before hand has varied from other contests to wanting to color with vibrant colors for me.

2010-06-10 [*Phoenix*]: People. I tend to do a lot of my drawings for other people here lately. If I see a picture I like I also have an impulse to draw it. Or just something I like in general. I'm into Pokemon and I've been playing my game a lot because I'm out of school so now I want to do a bunch of Pokemon themed pictures.

Motivation is a bit more tricky, but I've noticed that an alcohol intoxication can bring about a good amount of desire to finish. Unfortunately, you get too drunk and all you can do is lay around. Moderation is important for motivation, one could say. Some motivation less likely to cause a stir would be a significant other, passion is good motivation for anything.

2010-06-10 [Hendercrazy]: Outside of just naturally wanting to draw... the two biggest inspirations for me are visiting my favorite fellow artists sites/wikis looking at their work and also playing table-top RPG. I'm probably most motivated by visions that pop into my mind while listening to music and also seeing fellow artists producing really cool art. :)

2010-06-12 [hanhepi]: for me, it's tough to describe. it's sorta like Yncke's answer, the addiction bit. cause i'll go for weeks or months with no desire to do anything, then all of a sudden get an overwhelming urge to draw that i have to respond to or i get the shakes, get grumpier than usual and none of that goes away until i do something really creative. but i still haven't figured out what triggers that.
